Edith Rockefeller McCormick is a forgotten woman of Chicago history. Few know of the vital roles she played as the founder of Brookfield Zoo, supporter of Chicago Grand Opera, patron for Carl Jung and James Joyce, and founder of her own real estate firm. Her roller-coaster life included a bit of everything: tremendous wealth, great tragedy, numerous scandals, and a few opera divas. Edith’s story, as daughter of John D. Rockefeller and wife of Harold McCormick, serves as an excellent window into the initially confining but gradually broadening opportunities for women in the United States in the early 1900s.
